FUSION BONDED EPOXY COATING

FBEC

EPL's Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coating (FBEC) is the leader in coating application technology with automated plants for applying FBE coating on all sizes of rebars.

Over the years, EPL has been successfully undertaking large rebar coating projects of national importance in the infrastructure sector, such as railways and metros, highways and bridges, power stations and nuclear plants.

However, the ever-growing demand for long-lasting infrastructure in India in general and high-salinity coastal areas, in particular, led EPL to increase its production capacity and to upgrade its plants and machinery to meet this unprecedented demand from the infrastructure sector.

FBE coating is electrostatically applied in powder-form to the pre-cleaned surface of heated rebars, which melts down, fuses and cures to an adherent, continuous and chemically cross-linked protective film. This type of coating significantly reduces the amount of electrical current required for cathodic protection to prevent corrosion.

Unlike most other coatings, FBE coatings for rebars are not applied on-site. Instead, the bars are coated in a controlled factory environment where critical factors like temperature and humidity are monitored.

The main advantages of FBEC are :

  • It makes use of Epoxy's excellent adhesion (to steel) property.
  • It has good bond strength to concrete.
  • Electrostatic deposition ensures uniform coating-thickness around the rebar.
  • Combined with its high-edge build, FBEC provides excellent coverage on the ribs and edges of rebars.
  • It is highly resistant to salt-spray and alkaline solutions.
  • FBEC's flexibility allows post-coating bending of bars at the construction site.

FBEC's capacity to withstand a wide range of environmental conditions has been laboratory and field-tested to prove that it will last for at least three ecades. Thus, the concrete structure itself gets an extended lease of life, resulting in considerable cost-savings to the client.

FBEC Process Description

Fusion-bonded epoxy coatings for rebars are not applied on the job. Instead, the bars are coated in a strictly controlled factory process where epoxy powders are fusion-bonded to the steel surface. The powder is applied electrostatically to the cleaned surface of a hot steel rebar, where it fuses, melts down and cures to an adherent, continuous and chemically cross-linked protective film. This coating significantly reduces the amount of current required for cathodic protection to prevent corrosion. FBE Coating has been laboratory and field tested to assure customers of field-proven protection that will last for generations.
